87,000 People Employed in Permian Oil and Gas in 2019

It is no secret that the Permian Basin is known for having an abundance of oil and gas, resulting in an abundance of employees in that industry. In 2019, direct oil and natural gas employment totaled 87,603 people in the Permian Basin, according to a new report from the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association (TIPRO). Over the last decade, this number has increased by nearly 43,000 jobs. Here are 2019’s most populated counties by oil and natural gas: 

  • Midland (33,328)
  • Ector (14,791) 
  • Lea (8,356) 
  • Eddy (7,766) 
  • Hockley (2,765)

Job statistics

With 87,000 people working in oil and gas, this industry is booming and creating thousands of job opportunities; 54,507 job opportunities, to be exact! According to TIPRO’s report, crude petroleum and natural gas extraction provided 16,572 jobs, and drilling oil and gas wells supported another 6,554 jobs. 

The report also showed that 54% of Permian Basin oil and gas workers in 2019 were between the ages of 25 and 44, and about 35% were 45 years or older. Additionally, the report showed that Permian companies employed more than 12,560 women, and an average of 48% of jobs were held by Hispanic or Latino employees. 

In September of last year, TIPRO predicted that the Permian Basin oil and gas industry will provide 93,201 jobs in 2020.
